Superhero birthday party ideas that avoid the licensing trap

The plan

Two hours of superhero party

Food

  • "Power pellets" — grapes and blueberries in small cups, one per child.
  • Sandwiches cut into lightning bolts with a knife and no particular skill.
  • A cake with a bold zigzag across it in one contrasting colour.

Decorations

  • Red, blue and yellow paper everything. Three primary colours look intentional together.
  • Comic-style word cards — POW, ZAP — taped along the hallway.
  • Capes on the backs of the chairs as each child's place setting.

One thing that isn’t a screen

A training course down the hallway: crawl under a broom, hop through hoops, done in ninety seconds.

What usually goes wrong

The energy peaks in the first twenty minutes and then falls off a cliff. Put the tournament on right after cake, while they still have somewhere to put it.

A running order that works

  1. 0:00–0:20

    Arrival

    Guests trickle in over twenty minutes. Have the on-arrival activity out and the TV showing the attract screen.

  2. 0:20–0:45

    The activity

    One thing off the screen, with a clear end. Twenty-five minutes is the ceiling.

  3. 0:45–1:00

    Cake

    Sing, cut, hand it out. Do not do this at the start; sugar first is a mistake you make once.

  4. 1:00–1:40

    The tournament

    Five games on the TV, four kids at a time, names entered once. This is the loudest and easiest forty minutes of the party.

  5. 1:40–2:00

    Wind down

    Free play on the console, party bags by the door, parents arriving. The screen keeps everyone in one room while you hand out bags.
