Farm birthday party ideas for younger kids

Farm parties are for three to six year olds, and the whole plan should assume short attention and early tiredness.

The plan

Two hours of farm party

Food

  • Animal crackers in paper bags with each child's name on.
  • "Haystacks" — shredded wheat and melted chocolate, made the night before.
  • Carrot sticks in a jar, which small children eat standing up.

Decorations

  • Gingham tablecloth and a few plastic animals down the middle of the table.
  • Straw-coloured paper on the floor by the door, if you do not mind sweeping.
  • Animal masks the kids colour in while the rest arrive.

One thing that isn’t a screen

A farm-animal sound guessing game. Ten minutes, no equipment, works from age three.

What usually goes wrong

Standard game speeds are too fast for this age group. Switch the console to the Little Kids profile — larger targets, longer windows, nobody loses.

A running order that works

  1. 0:00–0:20

    Arrival

    Guests trickle in over twenty minutes. Have the on-arrival activity out and the TV showing the attract screen.

  2. 0:20–0:45

    The activity

    One thing off the screen, with a clear end. Twenty-five minutes is the ceiling.

  3. 0:45–1:00

    Cake

    Sing, cut, hand it out. Do not do this at the start; sugar first is a mistake you make once.

  4. 1:00–1:40

    The tournament

    Five games on the TV, four kids at a time, names entered once. This is the loudest and easiest forty minutes of the party.

  5. 1:40–2:00

    Wind down

    Free play on the console, party bags by the door, parents arriving. The screen keeps everyone in one room while you hand out bags.
