Dinosaur birthday party ideas that survive twenty kids

Dinosaurs are the easiest theme to buy for and the hardest to fill two hours with. Here is a plan that does not rely on a bouncy castle.

The plan

Two hours of dino party

Food

  • "Fossil" dig cupcakes: chocolate crumb on top, a gummy dinosaur half-buried in each.
  • Green grapes and broccoli as "herbivore snacks" — labelling vegetables is a genuinely effective trick.
  • Cocktail sausages as "carnivore bites". They vanish first, every time.

Decorations

  • A roll of brown paper on the table and a box of crayons. Kids draw the landscape themselves.
  • Inflatable palm plants in the corners of the room; they read as jungle from a photo.
  • Hide plastic dinosaurs around the room before anyone arrives and let them be found all afternoon.

One thing that isn’t a screen

A fossil dig in a shallow tray of sand or dry rice, with paintbrushes rather than hands.

What usually goes wrong

The dig gets messy and it ends after eight minutes. Plan it as the opener, not the main event, and have something running on the TV for what comes after.

A running order that works

  1. 0:00–0:20

    Arrival

    Guests trickle in over twenty minutes. Have the on-arrival activity out and the TV showing the attract screen.

  2. 0:20–0:45

    The activity

    One thing off the screen, with a clear end. Twenty-five minutes is the ceiling.

  3. 0:45–1:00

    Cake

    Sing, cut, hand it out. Do not do this at the start; sugar first is a mistake you make once.

  4. 1:00–1:40

    The tournament

    Five games on the TV, four kids at a time, names entered once. This is the loudest and easiest forty minutes of the party.

  5. 1:40–2:00

    Wind down

    Free play on the console, party bags by the door, parents arriving. The screen keeps everyone in one room while you hand out bags.
